Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan

From October 1, 2025, Business West Chambers of Commerce and Somerset Chamber of Commerce will be working together to plan and deliver the new Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP).

A Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) is a research project funded by the Department for Education (DfE) to align post-16 technical education and training with the needs of local employers.

Developed by Employer Representative Bodies (ERBs), such as Business West, LSIPs gather research on business needs and set actionable priorities. These priorities aim to enhance collaboration between employers, education and training providers, and stakeholders to better prepare employees for the workforce.

The Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan (LSIP) will continue to work with employers and education providers to help produce a skilled workforce better matched to the needs of business.

Previously, Somerset Chamber worked with Devon Chamber of Commerce to deliver the Devon & Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan.

We published our initial LSIP report following months of engagement with hundreds of businesses who have helped us understand the key changes that are needed to make sure they have access to a skilled labour market equipped for the future of work.

The report was updated for 2025, highlighting the progress made in the 20 key points for action.

Read the updated 2025 report here.

We are continuing to engage with businesses across Somerset to understand the key changes which are needed to make sure they have access to a skilled labour market equipped for the future of work.

We will work with Business West to:

  • Bring employers, colleges, independent training providers, and other local stakeholders together
  • Set out the key changes needed to make technical skills training more responsive to employers’ skills need
  • Tailor provision to the challenges and opportunities most relevant to the region
  • Address learner demand and make meaningful collaborative change

Full details about the LSIP can be found on the dedicated Business West and Somerset Chamber LSIP page: Somerset Local Skills Improvement Plan

Alternatively, if you have any questions, please email us at: lsip@somerset-chamber.co.uk

Together with Business West, Somerset Chamber is hosting a range of online focus groups as part of the LSIP to discuss the skills, training and workforce development needed to support both the future workforce and employers.

The groups are specifically for employers and skills providers to share insights about their experiences of current and emerging skills needs and the barriers to recruitment, retention and upskilling.

There is no charge to take part in a focus group and insights will help shape the future skills agenda in the region.

The online focus groups can be found in the events listings on Somerset Chamber’s website here.

We are also running a short survey for employers to have their say on future skills provision – the findings are vital to shape future events and skills funding in the county. The survey takes just five minutes to complete and can be found here.
