Biotech firm working with partners to boost STEM opportunities

Somerset biotech firm Singer Instruments is working on a range of initiatives to support young people into STEM.

The team collaborated with the Somerset Education Business Partnership (SEBP) to create a suite of videos that education providers can access to support student’s learning in STEM subjects.

The company, which is based in Roadwater in West Somerset, already has a page in the directory on SEBP’s website (here) while the videos are available on the Industry Insights page. They cover subjects from an introduction to Singer Instruments, career pathways, and women in STEM.

Singer Instruments is also building on an existing partnership with The Minehead Eye to enable them to access grant funding to support SEN, Young Carer and Home Educated groups.

Singer’s involvement is through advice and training for Minehead Eye staff, providing STEM activities and tours for groups, as well as setting challenges and competitions to enhance their skills. A 3D printer is already on loan from Singer’s and this has been very well used by various groups at The Minehead Eye.

Katie Parrington, of Singer Instruments, said: “Some years ago, we were approached by Bridgwater and Taunton College to ask if we would offer placements to BTEC engineering students.

“This involves students attending Singer Instruments for one day per week throughout the academic year. This was very successful, indeed, a number of these students are now Singer Instruments employees.

“The BTEC courses have now changed to T-Level but the process is the same. These are exciting times as we are about to welcome our first female T-Level mechanical engineering student, which will hopefully signal a trend to more equality and diversity in engineering.”
