WPA will be hosting a CRY (Cardiac Risk in the Young) screening in memory of Freya Davidson (pictured) tomorrow (Saturday), who passed away in 2023 at the age of just 18, from an undiagnosed heart condition.
Freya, the daughter of Neil Davidson, WPA’s Chief People Officer, had no prior symptoms or family history, before suffering a cardiac arrest, leaving her family, friends, and community devastated and determined that positive things should prevail.
In Freya’s memory, the Davidsons, Monkton Wood Academy, WPA colleagues, the WPA Foundation and the wider community have come together to support CRY’s mission: to prevent young sudden cardiac deaths through awareness, screening, and research.
This screening event for 14-35-year-olds is one of the many ways Freya’s legacy will live on, helping to identify young people at risk of hidden heart conditions and potentially saving lives.
Every week in the UK, at least 12 young people die from undiagnosed heart conditions. Since its formation in 1995, CRY has worked tirelessly to reduce the frequency of young sudden cardiac deaths.
CRY provides screening programs, supports families affected by cardiac conditions, funds medical research, and promotes awareness of heart health in the young.
On the screening day, over 100 young people, who have pre-booked their appointment, will undergo heart assessments conducted by a specialist team from St George’s Hospital, London.
Each individual will receive:
These tests can detect hidden cardiac abnormalities that could otherwise go unnoticed, offering early diagnosis and intervention.
Freya’s family remember her as a vibrant and compassionate young woman who had just begun her Biomedical Science studies at Cardiff University and are determined that as few people as possible have to endure similar heartbreak.
Neil Davidson said: “As a family we were overwhelmed by grief, but we are so grateful for the support that has made this CRY screening possible.
“CRY exists to stop families from suffering the loss we have endured, and we are deeply moved that Freya’s legacy is making a difference. We are especially thankful to our local community, family, friends, and WPA colleagues for their unwavering support.
“While she may not be able to physically help others, Freya’s medical research aspirations will live on in the work of CRY.”
