Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital has unveiled a major investment in robotic-assisted surgery, with a new VELYS Robotic-Assisted Solution, enabling consultant orthopaedic surgeons to perform knee replacement surgery using data tailored to each patient.
The VELYS system allows surgeons to create a detailed surgical plan for each individual, supporting key decisions during the procedure and helping to ensure each operation is carefully matched to the patient.
The technology provides accuracy and consistency throughout the procedure, while the surgeon retains full control at all times. For patients, this means access to an advanced approach to knee replacement surgery, with a focus on precision and consistency during the procedure.
The approach is designed to support improved outcomes and recovery and has been shown to reduce the risk of needing revision surgery. Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital is the only independent hospital in the region to offer the innovative technology.
Mandy Bridge, Hospital Director at Nuffield Health Taunton Hospital, said: “The arrival of the VELYS surgery system demonstrates the important role robotic technology plays in advancing healthcare and our ambition to ensure that our patients needing knee replacements have access to the best possible outcomes and experiences.
“We and our expert consultant surgeons take a personal approach by treating everyone as an individual with their health challenges and aspirations.”
Two consultant orthopaedic surgeons, Mr Benjamin Bolland and Mr Oliver Gosling, have completed specialist training and are now offering robotic-assisted knee replacement procedures at the hospital.
Mr Gosling, Consultant Orthopaedic Surgeon – who performed the first VLEYS knee replacement at Nuffield Health Taunton, said: “This is fantastic news for patients needing knee replacements across Somerset. This is cutting edge technology that allows us to plan procedures in much greater detail and tailor the surgery more closely to each individual patient. Most important, it helps us deliver better surgery, faster recovery, and better outcomes for patients.”
This investment comes on the back of a new, £200m partnership between Nuffield Health and GE HealthCare, which will see Taunton Hospital equipped with the latest AI-enabled diagnostic technology. Combined with this latest addition, these recent announcements transform the hospital into a major hub for orthopaedic surgery across Somerset.
