Somerset biotech firm Singer Instruments has strong values and its internal ED&I group (equality, diversity and inclusion) is committed to driving initiatives and addressing subjects that are often overlooked but can be extremely important in creating a positive change within the working environment.
During November, the ED&I group ran a campaign focusing on men’s health, both physical and mental. Headed up by Alec Smith of Singer Instruments, Alec wanted to take the opportunity to share some of his past experiences which have affected him and also give staff the opportunity to discuss difficult subjects surrounding men’s health, in a safe and supportive environment.
To encourage participation and be a conversation starter, Movember was embraced, seeing who could perfect the mighty moustache with prizes awarded to the Best in Show Moustache!
Trophies for first and second place were made in-house by the engineering team (pictured), using 3D-Laser printer technology.
Beki Singer, one of the company’s Board of Directors, judged the competition: “It was a great effort, although I suspect one of you may not have been clean shaven to begin with! A special mention to those who struggled, you were all very brave to get involved!”
First place was awarded to Will, Singers Engineering Manager, with a classic handlebar moustache. The presentation of trophies was made at the company’s Christmas party with all the contestants’ moustache photos proudly on show.
The month-long campaign was a great success in looking at the more serious side of men’s health. With thanks from members of staff who appreciated the opportunity to discuss difficult subjects they may not have otherwise opened up about.
Alec said: “I have found it both scary and enormously helpful – it made me stop and think about issues, some of which affect me and prompted me to do something about it.”
