Sending out a Stone Age SOS! Discover the stinky, epic, dangerous world of our prehistoric ancestors – and the secrets of Stone Age survival at Cheddar Gorge and Caves this summer!
Saturday 18th July – Monday 31st August 2026
Calling all young adventurers and prehistoric explorers!
Before doctors, medicine, or soap, survival meant knowing the land. Our ancestors used herbs, fire, and hygiene to fight illness, heal wounds, and keep the clan alive. ‘Stone Age SOS’ brings these forgotten skills back to life – with demonstrations and stories that show how health and survival were always intertwined.
Be transported through time and embark on an interactive and thrilling journey into the prehistoric world of our ancient ancestors this summer. Experience the excitement of the Stone Age in an action-packed day filled with live demonstrations, interactive fun, and unforgettable discoveries. This fun and educational adventure shines the spotlight on the hidden side of survival: prehistoric medicine, hygiene, and healing.
‘Stone Age SOS’ runs daily during the school holidays from Saturday 18th July to Monday 31st August.
Daily Talks and Live Demonstrations: • 11am & 2pm – Fire & Survival: ‘See our hunter-gatherers master the most powerful tool of all’ • 12pm & 3pm – Hunter Hygiene: ‘Stay Clean. Stay Alive’ • 1pm & 4pm – Ancient Remedies: ‘Healing plants and Stone Age secrets’
And keep a look out for Marmalade, our marvellous mammoth mascot; he’ll be doing meet and greets in front of Gough’s Cafe each day during selected times.
Plus there’s a lot more to do throughout the day: • Ask our hunter-gatherer team questions about life in prehistoric times. • Kids can get into character in our Stone Age dress-up corner. • Put your newly found knowledge to the test and complete the activity sheet – packed with fun challenges and puzzles. • There’s a special edition sticker to take home too. Your Day Ticket also includes access to five incredible attractions: • Gough’s Cave – Explore the awe-inspiring stalactite cave where Cheddar Man, Britain’s oldest and most complete human skeleton, was discovered. • Cox’s Cave – Yeo’s Journey – Immerse yourself in a stunning multimedia experience telling the story of how the power of water formed the caves. • Museum of Prehistory – Home to the ‘Stone Age SOS’ event, bringing the story of the Stone Age vividly to life. • Beyond the View – Discover local history, wildlife, and landscapes in our immersive cinema. • Jacob’s Ladder, The Lookout Tower and access to the Cliff-Top Walk – Climb 274 steps for panoramic views across the gorge and Mendip Hills.
