Accountancy and financial planning firm Albert Goodman has provided a £2,000 grant from its charitable foundation to Young Somerset, the county’s leading youth work charity. The money will support the charity’s STAR Opportunity Fund.
Young Somerset’s mission is to “put young people first”. It provides tailored support that helps young people develop the skills, confidence and resilience they need to thrive. The charity works with children and young people across Somerset through a wide range of programmes focused on education, mental health, employment and community engagement.
Over time, Young Somerset has adapted its services and shifted towards more targeted support, ensuring that young people facing significant barriers receive specialised help.
STAR is the Young Somerset Opportunity fund which provides vulnerable and disadvantaged young people with opportunities in music, arts, sport, and recreation. The fund relies entirely on grants, fundraising and donations, so the number of young people it can help depends on the support it receives.
Professionals apply to STAR on behalf of recipients, and requests range from as little as £50 up to the maximum award of £500. Because many requests are relatively small, the £2,000 grant will help a significant number of young people.
Michelle Ferris, Partner & Head of Charities at Albert Goodman, said: “We set up the Albert Goodman Charitable Foundation to support causes making a real difference in the communities we serve, with a particular focus on youth and social mobility. Young Somerset’s STAR fund is a brilliant example of how a relatively small amount of money can have a huge impact on a young person’s life. Whether it’s a pair of football boots or a musical instrument, these opportunities help young people build confidence and connections that can stay with them for years to come.”
Peter Elliot, head of Partnership & Development at Young Somerset, said: “We’re incredibly grateful to the Albert Goodman Charitable Foundation for its support. This grant means we can respond to more young people across Somerset and help them access the opportunities, essentials and support they need to prosper.”
The Albert Goodman Charitable Foundation was set up to support charities and community organisations across the region, with a focus on education and social mobility in the areas where the firm has locations.
