Somerset Voices – a spotlight on Andy Berry CBE, CEO of UCS College Group

Somerset Chamber is proud to support a diverse range of organisations in the Somerset business community who are as passionate about our region as we are.

In a new series of interviews, we will be shining a spotlight on some of our Business Partners, recognising their commitment to Somerset, its business community and beyond.

Somerset Voices is also a chance to find out more about the people behind the brands!

Our next Somerset Voices spotlight is Andy Berry CBE, CEO of UCS College Group

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role. What does a typical day look like for you?

As the CEO of UCS College Group, my role is centred around identifying opportunities that will support our vision: transforming lives. Born and raised in Somerset, I am passionate about creating opportunities for everyone and have enjoyed a fulfilling career at the college spanning 30 years.

No two days are the same, which is something I love about my role. One day, I might be in London discussing the skills agenda with a parliamentary group or the Department for Education, the next day I could be outlining our investment proposition for Advanced Manufacturing with Agratas to support the new GigaFactory being built.

I enjoy all the diverse aspects of my role, from strategic planning and community engagement to advocacy for policies that support education. Every day brings new opportunities to transform learning and enrich our region’s talent pool, ultimately driving economic development and prosperity in Somerset.

Can you tell us about your business/organisation, what you do, where you’re based and how your work has a positive impact on those you work with?

UCS College Group comprises four colleges: Bridgwater, Cannington, Strode, and Taunton, along with our higher education arm, University Centre Somerset. As one of the largest college groups in England, we employ over 1,500 staff and have more than 22,000 students enrolled. We are the largest further education apprenticeship provider in England, with a turnover of approximately £90 million.

Central to our approach is the student experience; we focus on more than academic excellence by taking a holistic approach. We work with students on essential soft skills such as resilience, community engagement, and digital skills to ensure they not only have the qualifications to compete in an increasingly competitive world but also possess the skills needed to support them.

We are committed to fostering strong ties with local businesses to ensure that our curriculum is academically excellent and reflects industry needs, creating pathways for students to secure employment post-graduation.

By empowering individuals through education, we contribute to the growth of our community, enhancing the local workforce and driving economic development. For example, over 450 nurses have joined the local workforce after graduating from one of our nursing degrees.

What do you enjoy most about doing business in Somerset?

I absolutely love Somerset; there is such a strong sense of community and collaboration. This region is characterised by its collective ambition and passion, making it a vibrant place to work.

Business leaders are determined to create opportunities for people across Somerset which inspires collaboration across sectors, enabling us to build innovative programmes and solutions that benefit our students and the community.

Additionally, the beautiful countryside and rich cultural heritage of Somerset provide a superb backdrop for fostering learning and engagement.

Outside of work, what’s your ‘Somerset favourite’, as in a place to visit or activity you like to do in our county?

Outside of work, my favourite place in Somerset is a small campsite just outside Glastonbury, where I love to relax with my wife and our dog. We can pack up the van and be there in less than half an hour! I can unwind, take the dog for long walks up the Tor, and enjoy the beautiful countryside; it’s so peaceful.

In addition to this, I love DIY projects. My son recently purchased his first house, and I’m helping him with the renovation. I really enjoy using my hands and seeing everything come together.

This mix of activities helps me recharge, allowing me to return to my work with renewed energy and focus.
