UCS College Group’s Bridgwater College’s sports department has been shortlisted as a finalist in the Pearson National Teaching Awards for FE Team of the Year 2026.
This national recognition celebrates the work of the college’s sport team. The department has developed a holistic, evidence-driven model that combines academic study, high-performance sport, and personal development.
Students benefit from a learning environment where participation, performance, and wellbeing are equally valued, ensuring they leave college with the confidence, resilience and employability skills needed for future success.
A key strength of the programme is its strong network of partnerships with local clubs, schools, charities and national sporting organisations. These collaborations provide students with real-world experience, from coaching in the community to competing at county and national levels.
The team is also leading the way in innovation within further education, embedding digital tools and artificial intelligence into teaching and assessment. From interactive learning platforms to student-created podcasts and performance analysis using GPS and video technology, the curriculum is designed to reflect modern industry practices.
Importantly, the department has made significant strides in widening participation, particularly in girls’ sport. Through sustained community engagement, girls’ football participation in the local area has increased from 30% to 60%, with further growth expected.
At the heart of the department’s success is a collaborative team of specialist staff, each bringing industry expertise and strong community links. Together, they create a cohesive learning experience that goes beyond traditional classroom teaching, offering students meaningful pathways into employment, higher education, and elite sport.
Alex Leach, Deputy Head of Sport, said: “To be a finalist for this award is a huge honour, and I couldn’t be prouder of the team. Their dedication to our students, their willingness to innovate, and the way they support each other every day is what makes this department so special. This recognition is thoroughly deserved.”
