Somerset Voices - a spotlight on James Holyday, Group Managing Director of Summerfield

Somerset Chamber is proud to support a diverse range of organisations in the Somerset business community who are as passionate about our region as we are.

In the latest in our ongoing series of interviews, we will be shining a spotlight on some of our Business Partners, recognising their commitment to Somerset, its business community and beyond.

Somerset Voices is also a chance to find out more about the people behind the brands!

Our next Somerset Voices spotlight is on James Holyday, Group Managing Director of Summerfield.

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role. What does a typical day look like for you?

I’m James Holyday, Group Managing Director of Summerfield. I am immensely proud to be helping to run the family business which grew from a company founded by my ancestor, William Stansell. As a leading property developer, we build and deliver new homes and workspaces across the region. Every day is different. I could be in a board meeting, checking sites, networking or helping one of the charities we support. I like to get out and about as it is a pleasure to see so many of the communities our company has had a hand in building.

Can you tell us about your business/organisation, what you do, where you’re based and how your work has a positive impact on those you work with?

Summerfield is an award-winning property developer in Taunton where it grew out of a building company founded 200 plus years ago. We specialise in high quality housing developments in great locations, combining sustainable construction with modern living. We also create flexible workspaces in prime locations for sale or rent. Our best-known business parks include Taunton’s Blackbrook and Westpark and Chelston in Wellington. We pride ourselves in providing the right space in the right place for homes and businesses. Focused on community and environment, Summerfield has contributed more than £6.1 million to local causes and planted 1.1 million trees.

What do you enjoy most about doing business in Somerset?

Somerset is where I was born and where my family has roots, so I might be biased. It is a great place to live and work. What I love most is its diversity. It offers excellent connectivity, beautiful countryside and has a strong sense of community. It is a large county but a small world in terms of business. Having worked here for many years, I have come to know its key players and organisations which makes collaborating more meaningful. Our business has links to many of its best-loved buildings so it’s a pleasure to see them daily.

Outside of work, what’s your ‘Somerset favourite’, as in a place to visit or activity you like to do in our county?

As a main sponsor of Taunton Rugby Football Club we are hugely proud to have the home of the Titans renamed The Summerfield Stadium. I guess one of my favourite places to be is at the ground with friends, family, colleagues and contacts, enjoying the sport and a drink or two. I am a keen follower of most sports and we are sponsors at other local venues such Taunton Deane Cricket Club, Watchet Football Club and Taunton Racecourse. Somerset offers a mix of coastline, countryside and culture so there is always plenty to do.

How long have you been members of Somerset Chamber of Commerce and what prompted you to join?

Summerfield has been a member of the Somerset Chamber since 2009 and we recently became a Business Partner. Joining was a natural choice as we do so much business locally. The Chamber helps us stay connected, informed and engaged with the business community and customers through Chamber events.

What has been the most valuable aspect for you/your organisation, of being part of Somerset Chamber?

Summerfield is rooted in Somerset. We are committed to helping create stronger and thriving communities. Business is the mainstay of any community and we value the opportunity our membership of Somerset Chamber gives us to be at the centre of things and have a voice.  It also keeps us connected with an extensive network of possible suppliers, tenants and customers. You never know where you will find your next new collaboration or opportunity.

What advice would you give to a business thinking of joining Somerset Chamber?

I’d say don’t think twice about joining. It’s an excellent place to connect with key people across the County and for raising your profile. For a member, the Chamber provides a voice on a local and national level and helps provide opportunities for your business to grow and stay informed.
