Our next Somerset Voices spotlight is Debra Spurway, Executive Director at the HR Dept Somerset:
Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role. What does a typical day look like for you?
My name is Debra Spurway. I am the Executive Director of the HR Dept Somerset which I started 19 years ago. As a business owner, my day is always very varied.
When running my business, I will be overseeing the requirements of the service to our clients and making sure my business is meeting all of its legal compliance towards any regulatory requirements.
In an ever-changing business landscape I also spend time speaking to any organisation that can lobby the Government to consider small businesses what will help them.
Can you tell us about your business/organisation, what you do, where you’re based and how your work has a positive impact on those you work with?
We are an outsourced HR and Employment law service to SMEs. Based in Taunton, we support business owners and their managers to help them manage their employer obligations and to follow the correct processes with all employment scenarios.
We have long term clients who have used our services to help them sleep at night and for them to continue to run their business without risk.
What do you enjoy most about doing business in Somerset?
I grew up in Somerset, and my family have always had businesses in Somerset. Hence, a great opportunity to contribute to business in the Somerset community. When I as working in corporate life it has been so wonderful to watch and see people within those businesses grow in their knowledge, skills and ability. It can make a day in the town more interesting as you bump into your clients and people you’ve worked with.
Outside of work, what’s your ‘Somerset favourite’, as in a place to visit or activity you like to do in our county?
There are many places I enjoy. Glastonbury, Taunton, Crewkerne. I enjoy the churches and history of many towns. Growing up in Crewkerne, I have fond memories of the shop my father owned and his siblings owning a local pub and garage. A family community.
How long have you been members of Somerset Chamber of Commerce and what prompted you to join?
I chose to join as I wanted to be part of the business community who share and help each other. It is a good way to meet more business people and an opportunity to have a ‘say’ about supporting business. I cannot remember exactly, however a long-term member
What has been the most valuable aspect for you/your organisation, of being part of Somerset Chamber?
To meet like-minded business people. To be able to be involved in more of the ways in which laws and compliance shape industry. Having the access to business related knowledge and skills.
Sharing my knowledge to other business types and to give my connections to others who should have an opportunity to meet.
What advice would you give to a business thinking of joining Somerset Chamber?
It really is a community that will help your business. The amount of members who wish to share their business journey and all the support you never thought you might need when considering whether to join. See the website, there is so much on offer.
