Plant Skills Bootcamp participants at the Construction Training Centre were visited by three potential employers and were given the opportunity to have ‘speed interviews’ with each of them.
The Construction Training Centre, located just off the M5, is the home to many individuals who are either retraining, upskilling, or beginning their career in the trade industry. It offers training in a wide range of areas, including plant, site managerial courses, and health and safety.
The employers who attended were Hays Construction, Kier Construction and Milestones Trust and each provided the learners with a presentation detailing who they were and what the company does, as well as the employment they could offer.
Following this, the learners were able to have one-on-one ‘speed interviews’ with each of the employers, to discuss what they could bring to the company and if it would be a good fit.
It was a highly successful day, with many of the learners asking questions to find out more about their potential future careers, as well as lots of very engaged conversations about the logistics of working on site.
A participant currently training to be 360 excavator certified, spoke about why he wanted to the chance to speak to the employers: “I didn’t want to be a labourer anymore – it was too wet and cold for me, so I wanted to upskill to increase employability. This is the perfect opportunity to find out what’s out there and be able to discuss with multiple employers what my best route would be.”
Anna Coleman, Skills Project Co-Ordinator, said: “We’re thrilled to be able to help bridge the gap between training and employment. Having a close relationship with employers is crucial and giving them the opportunity to freely talk to our learners about their future careers is amazing! I’m so grateful to the employers who came to the event today; it was very successful!”
