Somerset Voices – a spotlight on Nick Spicer, CEO of Your Eco

Somerset Chamber is proud to support a diverse range of organisations in the Somerset business community who are as passionate about our region as we are.

In a new series of interviews, we will be shining a spotlight on some of our Business Partners, recognising their commitment to Somerset, its business community and beyond.

Somerset Voices is also a chance to find out more about the people behind the brands!

Our next Somerset Voices spotlight is Nick Spicer, CEO of Your Eco:

Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role. What does a typical day look like for you?

I’m Nick Spicer, CEO at Your Eco, a Somerset-based renewable energy company I co-founded nine years ago. My background spans military leadership—I was the youngest Acting Major at 27—and over 20 years in the energy sector, delivering 30MW+ of solar infrastructure nationwide.

A typical day involves strategic planning with our 25-strong team, reviewing our commercial pipeline, engaging with plc clients, and ensuring our projects maintain our on-time delivery rate. I balance programme oversight with business development, team leadership, and advancing our mission: working towards an energy-independent, low-carbon future whilst maintaining our certified B Corp status and 20% profit margins.

Can you tell us about your business/organisation, what you do, where you’re based and how your work has a positive impact on those you work with?

Your Eco is a Bath-based renewable energy company with regional offices in Bristol, Truro, and London, specialising in commercial solar PV installations. We’ve delivered 30MW+ of solar infrastructure for clients including Siemens, National Trust, NHS trusts, and MDL Marinas—projects ranging from 100kW to 1MW with 4-6 year ROI.

We’re a certified B Corp, one of only five SolarEdge Platinum Enterprise Partners in the UK, and hold ISO 9001, 14001, and 45001 certifications. Beyond installations, we donate 1.5% of project value to our charitable foundation, funding smokeless stoves and agroforestry in Central America—300+ stoves and 500,000+ trees planted to date.

What do you enjoy most about doing business in Somerset?

Somerset offers the perfect balance for scaling a purpose-driven business. The region’s strong environmental ethos aligns perfectly with our mission—clients here genuinely value sustainability, making conversations about renewable energy investment far more strategic than transactional.

Bath’s connectivity is invaluable; we can reach Bristol, London, and the South West efficiently whilst maintaining lower overheads than metropolitan locations. The local business community is collaborative rather than cutthroat—Chamber connections, supplier partnerships, and peer networks have been instrumental in our growth.

Most importantly, Somerset attracts and retains exceptional talent. Our sub-5% staff turnover reflects the quality of life here. People want to build careers in the region, which means we’re developing deep expertise rather than constantly rebuilding our team.

Outside of work, what’s your ‘Somerset favourite’, as in a place to visit or activity you like to do in our county?

I’m a keen paddleboarder, and Somerset’s rivers are exceptional for it. There’s something restorative about being on the water—whether it’s the Avon through Bath, the Tone near Taunton, or exploring the Somerset Levels’ intricate waterways. It’s the perfect counterbalance to the intensity of scaling a business.

Paddleboarding forces you into the present moment; you can’t be mentally running through project pipelines or commercial strategies when you’re navigating currents. The county’s diverse waterways—from gentle meanders to more challenging stretches—mean there’s always somewhere new to explore. It’s become essential for mental clarity and perspective, and honestly, some of my best business decisions have crystallised during a quiet paddle through Somerset’s stunning countryside.

How long have you been members of Somerset Chamber of Commerce and what prompted you to join?

We’ve been members for the past few years, drawn by Somerset Chamber’s collaborative approach to business and the opportunities it provides for our voices to be heard nationally. The Chamber’s advocacy on renewable energy policy and net-zero initiatives aligns perfectly with our mission, giving us a platform to influence meaningful change whilst connecting with like-minded businesses across the region.

What has been the most valuable aspect for you/your organisation, of being part of Somerset Chamber?

The most valuable aspect has been the genuine advocacy platform Somerset Chamber provides. As a renewable energy business navigating complex policy landscapes—grid connection delays, planning regulations, funding mechanisms—having the Chamber amplify our sector’s challenges to national policymakers has been invaluable.

Beyond advocacy, the networking opportunities are strategic rather than superficial. We’ve connected with potential clients, supply chain partners, and local colleges to shape the green jobs of the future. The Chamber’s events facilitate meaningful conversations that translate into business relationships.

Equally important is the credibility membership brings. Being part of Somerset Chamber signals to clients—particularly public sector and blue-chip organisations—that we’re a serious, established business committed to regional economic growth, not just project delivery.

What advice would you give to a business thinking of joining Somerset Chamber?

Engage actively—don’t just join and wait for value to appear. Attend events, contribute to policy consultations, and build genuine relationships with fellow members. The Chamber’s worth is directly proportional to your participation. If you’re committed to regional growth, sustainability, and having your voice heard on issues that matter, membership pays dividends beyond simple networking.
