Somerset-based consultant, educator, member of Somerset Chamber of Commerce and author David Hutchins spent the first week of October in Alicante, Spain, as a judge of 21 Quality Circle teams from across Europe, Morocco and Mexico.
All the teams were employees of Motherson, one of the world’s most successful companies, with 205,000 employees in 475 facilities across 47 countries and an annual turnover of $22.9 billion.
For about 50 years, David has worked with organisations in Britain and in over 40 countries, helping Western organisations understand the thinking behind Japan’s management success and adapt it to their own people and culture.
He has won the IAQ Walter E. Masing Book Prize and in 2025 received the Deming Distinguished Practice Award in Tokyo, becoming the first European to receive this international honour for quality and continuous improvement.
One of David’s specialisms is leading study missions to Japan and the next one takes place in February 2027.
