Somerset Film is offering an exciting opportunity for a Somerset-based artist to work as the Ignite Somerset Artist in Residence at The Engine Room in Bridgwater from mid June to mid-Sept 2023. This is an opportunity for artists working in any medium including: visual arts, performance, dance, music, sound art and the written word.
Somerset Film wants the artist to create a piece of digital art for outdoor projection on the theme of the natural environment, climate action and/or climate justice. They are interested to see how the artist merges digital ideas with their existing practice.
In 2019 Somerset Film responded to ongoing environmental concerns, declaring a climate emergency. They explore this thematically through their programme of digital media activities across Somerset, to inform and facilitate action to mitigate the climate emergency. Their ongoing aim is to make their environmental action plan as embedded as their approach to tackling isolation and addressing diversity.
Somerset Film aims to reduce its carbon footprint while increasing its reach and impact and use its strengths in storytelling and community engagement to enable others to explore this issue and do the same.
Somerset Film’s Creative Technologist, Daniel Birch, said: “This is an amazing opportunity for an artist who lives in the county of Somerset, is over 18 and wants to develop their practice to explore the creative potential of digital technology.
“The artist can have experience working in any medium with a demonstrable practice and body of work. During the residency they would produce a new digital artwork for an outdoor showcase projection event in September to coincide with Somerset Open Studios weeks.
“I would encourage local artists to apply as the residency will be supported by our team at Somerset Film and is an incredible experience to immerse yourself in learning about digital technology to produce a meaningful piece of work.”
Somerset Film is welcoming applications from emerging (undergraduates and recent graduates), disabled and ethnically diverse artists. To apply for the residency, send an outline proposal that describes your current practice and how you intend to use this opportunity (no more than 500 words), accompanied by a CV and three images that demonstrate your work, include links to any examples of your work online. Send your proposal to laura@somersetfilm.com by midday on Wednesday, May 10, 2023. Find out more about this creative opportunity by visiting: www.somersetfilm.com/community.
