Somerset charity PROMISEworks has been supporting vulnerable children and young people across the county since 2017, through volunteer mentoring and has a new addition in the Taunton area.
Sue Bill, the Somerset Coast Area Co-ordinator, took over the charity’s Taunton patch earlier this year and said she was looking forward to working in the community.
“I am truly excited to be working with such a vibrant community as Taunton and I look forward to recruiting many new wonderful volunteer mentors in and around the Taunton area,” said Sue.
“The innovative mechanisms of PROMISEworks, means that although we work collaboratively across the community in the health, social and educational sectors, giving our young people a voice, the volunteer mentors are kept separate from this, allowing them to develop trusted relationships with their young person which can flourish.”
The latest impact report from PROMISEworks, echoed this. After just over seven months of mentoring, 100% of mentees felt that their mentor is ‘good for them’ and ‘on their side’.
At the end of last year, PROMISEworks’ four day in house training, delivered to all potential mentors became endorsed via the Open College Network (OCN).
Sue said: “This has been a huge step forward for us as it has allowed us to extend our demographic, enticing working age people to join us and expand their professional development, growing our volunteer mentors across multi generations.”
She added: “Anyone can volunteer, giving two hours weekly or fortnightly over a two year period. We would also welcome Somerset businesses who would like to collaborate with us, by using their corporate volunteer days to access the training for their team and then help us to support more vulnerable children in Somerset through mentoring.”
