MP supports PROMISEworks to highlight need for volunteer mentors

Representatives from PROMISEworks attended a press conference at the East Quay, in Watchet, alongside local MP Rachael Gilmore to raise awareness of the growing need for volunteer mentors within the local community.

The conference brought together representatives from local councils in Watchet, Porlock and Minehead, as well as members of the media, including BBC Somerset and Greatest Hits Radio Somerset.

Sue Bill, Somerset Area Co-ordinator for PROMISEworks, said the event had been very successful: “We received over 15 mentor applications from across the region.

“This is incredibly positive for us as a charity, as it means we have the potential to support more vulnerable children and young people.”

She added: “Each applicant will have the opportunity to attend our in-house endorsed training, with the aim of being carefully matched with a young person for a minimum of two years. This allows time to build a trusted and meaningful relationship.”

She thanked those who had organised and supported the event and she she was looking forward to continuing the charity’s work to support vulnerable children and young people across Somerset.

Anyone interested in becoming a mentor or learning more about the charity can find out more at: www.promiseworks.org.uk.
