Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance held its new ultra-cycling challenge, ‘Race from the Base’ on Saturday, June 10.
Hundreds of participants took part on the day, cycling one of three routes: 30km (The Circuit), 60km (The Cruise) and 100km (The Climb). All routes started and finished at Henstridge Airfield, the home of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance team.
Three pit-stops were located along the route, which provided a well-earned rest and refreshments for those that that wanted it, while an array of fun-filled activities and stalls were located within the ‘Basecamp Village’ at Henstridge Airfield for everyone to enjoy.
Those who took part included members of the Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance crew and former patients of the life-saving service, whilst others cycled in memory of loved ones, as a personal challenge or as a team.
At 78 years young, Kevon Rendell from Beaminster was the oldest participant on the day, while 11-year-old Annabel Hyland from Sherborne was the youngest, showing the event’s suitability for all ages and abilities.
Everyone was keen to support the life-saving work of Dorset and Somerset Air Ambulance and raise as much as possible. The total amount raised from the event will be announced in due course once all sponsorship monies have been received. The charity will then also announce the winner of the Hugo Yaxley Trophy for the best fundraiser.

“My thanks go to everyone who took part or supported the event and made it so special. Next up is our 5K Twilight Shift which is once again being held at Henstridge Airfield on Saturday, September 23.
“Join us for a 5K run or walk which will once again be raising funds for our life-saving charity – we’ll be announcing details soon and would love to see you there.”
