A celebration of Christmas at Somerset Rural Life Museum

See Somerset Rural Life Museum beautifully decorated for Christmas with festive foliage, Christmas angels and an immersive sound installation in the 14th Century Abbey Barn.

On Saturday November 23 and 30 visitors can drop in to the Ink Jam Angel Workshop. Create a 3D angel using recycled materials with gold and silver embossing and see them suspended in flight as part of the ‘Chorus of Angels’ Christmas display.

On the 23rd, there will also be chance to learn about the tradition of Stir Up Sunday as the museum team spends the morning making Christmas puddings in the farmhouse kitchen.

From Saturday, December 7, ‘A Celebration of Christmas’ opens when the museum will be decorated for Christmas with festive foliage and the ‘Chorus of Angels’ display will be up.

The ‘Voices of Christmas’ sound installation will be live in the Abbey Barn alongside the Christmas tree. Children can explore the museum on the cuddly elf trail. The Grain Store Café will be open serving festive treats and hot drinks.

On Friday, December 13, there is late night opening from 5pm until 9pm with a chance to toast marshmallows around the fire.

Heading into the new year, there is a calendar making activity for families on Tuesday, December 31 and on Friday, January 3 there will be donkeys visiting the museum, with children’s rides available.

Museum Manager, Sue Leask, said: “The Museum will be the perfect place for local people to come and get in the Christmas spirit with immersive installations and family-friendly festive fun this holiday. It is the first year we have opened late, so we look forward to welcoming visitors to this special evening.”
