Somerset Chamber of Commerce Introduction

Somerset Chamber of Commerce is one of only 51 Chambers nationally that are accredited by the British Chambers of Commerce (BCC). Somerset Chamber is the business representative organisation for Somerset. Being a membership organisation, the Chamber is funded by business, for business, and has a key role with championing business in Somerset but also supporting the vibrant community of chamber members to connect, influence and grow.

It’s an exciting time to join Somerset Chamber. The membership is the highest since 2017 and the Chamber has ambitious plans to grow its community of members through the creation and delivery of a new strategic plan. To achieve this, we are investing in developing a first-class team focused on service excellence and business growth.

Somerset Chamber is seeking to recruit a dynamic, personable and business-focused Membership Account Manager to join an experienced team. The post-holder will be a super-connector with a passion for developing relationships and supporting chamber members, creating strong member retention and driving the overall growth of Somerset Chamber.

Role Overview

The role of Membership Account Manager will focus on building relationships with members and ensuring the Chamber adds value and responds to its member community. The role requires a focus on building relationships through and responding to members, liaising with multiple stakeholders within a business, and a commitment to service excellence as the Chamber continuously looks to enhance its services for Somerset businesses.

Principal Accountabilities

Account management

  • Develop an Account Management Strategy with colleagues and the Managing Director with a focus on member retention
  • Manage the relationship with business members, with a focus on medium and large members (10+ employees), as a key point of contact
  • Conduct membership review meetings with existing members via in-person site visits or online meetings
  • Develop strategies for managing high-value memberships, including risk-rating members and proactively build relationships to retain and increase member retention
  • Respond to member queries via phone and email, including facilitating member-to-member introductions
  • Respond to member feedback to suggest and introduce new initiatives to the Chamber team

Stakeholder engagement

  • Engage with wider stakeholders including local town chambers and trade associations to ensure Somerset Chamber activity compliments wider business support activity
  • Drive the continuous improvement of Somerset Chamber’s member offering by liaising with other regional chambers and the British Chamber of Commerce to share good practice
  • Organise and coordinate chamber initiatives and projects
  • Deputise for the Managing Director where required at external events and meetings

 Marketing, communications and business development

  • Work closely with the Communications Manager to ensure membership offerings are promoted via digital and print channels, including member money saving benefits, member testimonials and case studies and exclusive member opportunities such as workshops and tours
  • Assist with the management of social media accounts alongside the Chamber Communications Manager
  • Take ownership over the membership section of the website ensuring content is clear, relevant and engaging
  • Support with the development of membership marketing collateral
  • Capture photographs and case studies at member visits, ensuring the value of membership is captured and shared to create membership enquiries
  • Refer and introduce potential members to the Membership Consultant for follow up
  • Attend business development events such as conferences and networking events to promote the Chamber

 Events support

  • Work closely with the team including the Events and Commercial Partnerships Manager to shape the annual events calendar, ensuring it meets the needs of members
  • Attend Somerset Chamber events to network with members and non-members
  • Support the Events and Commercial Partnerships Manager, where required, ensuring smooth running of events to maximise the attendee experience
  • Suggest members who can offer event venues, secure guest speakers such as panellists and keynote speakers, and introduce members to sponsor events
  • Perform hosting duties on behalf of the Managing Director to welcome attendees and deliver closing remarks at in-person events
  • Support with the facilitation of online networking events for members and webinars

Administration

Communicate relevant updates to members in line with the Chamber Communications Strategy

  • Support the administration and development of the CRM system
  • Provide member feedback (quantitative and qualitative) to the Chamber team
  • Provide support to other colleagues when necessary as agreed with the Managing Director
  • Create a monthly membership board report for the Managing Director to submit to the Chamber Board

 Person Specification

Essential

  • Proven experience in membership management or account management with a minimum of 5 years business to business account management experience.
  • Excellent relationship-building capabilities and communication skills, both written and telephone manner.
  • Digital skills including capability to use Microsoft 365, experience of using CRM systems, and willingness to learn new systems introduced as the Chamber evolves its digital capabilities.
  • Strong organisational and project management abilities, with excellent planning skills and organisation skills, with a methodical approach to planning time to achieve tasks.
  • Flexible approach to work independently and as a committed player team.
  • Flexible approach to working times, as out of hours working will occasionally be requested (time off in lieu provided).
  • Access to own transport to visit member premises across Somerset.
  • Problem-solving and strategic thinking skills.
  • Effective presentation skills and experience.
  • Leadership skills with the ability to represent Somerset Chamber externally, professionally at all times.

Desirable

  • Extensive project management experience.
  • Understanding of marketing techniques including social media.
  • Experience of working for a commercially funded membership organisation.

 Terms & Conditions

  • Working Hours – Permanent, Part time 25 hours per week. This can be across Monday – Friday (school hours) or three days a week which must include a Monday and Tuesday.
  • Occasional flexibility required to attend events or meetings on behalf of the Managing Director. Working hours may vary depending on event times, including breakfast events and evening dinner events (Time Off in Lieu provided).
  • Working arrangements – Flexible and hybrid working (Monday and Tuesday based in the Chamber Taunton office, remainder of the week working remotely)
  • Travelling Expenses – 45p per mile (from Taunton office for business mileage)
  • Holiday – 25 days per year (plus bank holidays) increasing with length of service
  • Benefits – Healthcare plan, free car parking, pension, well-being support and benefits access to GP and counselling services, hybrid working
  • Annual salary – £35,000 – £40,000 per annum pro-rata
