Our next Somerset Voices spotlight is on Alex Clancy, Assistant Principal for Employer Engagement at Yeovil College.
Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role. What does a typical day look like for you?
I’m Alex Clancy, Assistant Principal for Employer Engagement at Yeovil College. My role focuses on building strong partnerships with employers, local authorities and regional bodies to ensure our provision aligns with current and future skills needs. A typical day might involve strategic meetings with major employers, developing new apprenticeship or technical pathways, supporting funded projects in defence, green skills and digital, and working with my team to grow opportunities for learners. I’m passionate about connecting education with industry and ensuring Somerset’s workforce is equipped to thrive.
Can you tell us about your business/organisation, what you do, where you’re based and how your work has a positive impact on those you work with?
Yeovil College is a major provider of technical education, apprenticeships and professional training for Somerset and the wider South West. Based in Yeovil, we work closely with employers across defence, engineering, construction, health and digital sectors to develop skills pipelines that support economic growth. Our work benefits learners through high-quality training and clear progression routes, and supports businesses by helping them recruit, retain and upskill talent. Through collaboration and investment, the College strengthens Somerset’s future workforce.
What do you enjoy most about doing business in Somerset?
Somerset has a strong sense of collaboration and pride in place. Businesses, education providers and public sector partners are genuinely willing to work together. From global manufacturers to innovative SMEs, the county offers a dynamic mix that supports meaningful partnerships. I value the openness of local networks and the ability to turn conversations into action. Doing business in Somerset feels personal, purposeful and focused on long-term impact. There is real opportunity across the South West – I’m extremely excited to see what the future brings and how we can support our community in achieving these gamechangers in the advanced manufacturing, defence, green and digital sectors.
Outside of work, what’s your ‘Somerset favourite’, as in a place to visit or activity you like to do in our county?
Outside work, I enjoy making the most of Somerset with my family. Walking or cycling in the Mendip Hills or along the Dorset coast is a favourite way to reset after a busy week. I’m also actively involved in grassroots sport, coaching youth girls’ football locally, which keeps me connected to the community. Somerset’s countryside, coastline and vibrant towns make it a fantastic place to live and work.
How long have you been members of Somerset Chamber of Commerce and what prompted you to join?
Yeovil College has been a member of Somerset Chamber of Commerce for years. We joined to strengthen connections with the local business community, better understand employer needs and contribute to conversations around skills, growth and economic development across the county.
What has been the most valuable aspect for you/your organisation, of being part of Somerset Chamber?
Being part of Somerset Chamber gives us access to a highly engaged business network. The Chamber supports collaboration, insight-sharing and partnerships that directly inform our employer engagement and curriculum planning. Events and forums keep us close to emerging business challenges, helping us respond with relevant skills solutions, while the Chamber’s advocacy ensures Somerset’s voice is heard regionally and nationally.
What advice would you give to a business thinking of joining Somerset Chamber?
Get involved and make the most of the network. Somerset Chamber is about relationships, insight and influence. The Chamber is in such a positive place, with David and the team consistently pushing the Chamber and its ambition and impact forward.
