Our next Somerset Voices spotlight is Nigel Colman, Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters UK.
Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role. What does a typical day look like for you?
My name is Nigel Colman and I am the Managing Director of Leonardo Helicopters UK. Each day, I oversee operations at our Yeovil site, known as the Home of British Helicopters. Here, we manufacture and maintain aircraft, delivering advanced capabilities to the UK Armed Forces and a range of international customers. Our team is dedicated to upholding British engineering excellence, ensuring our helicopters remain at the forefront of innovation and operational reliability. It is a privilege to lead such a skilled workforce supporting both national defence and global customers.
Can you tell us about your business/organisation, what you do, where you’re based and how your work has a positive impact on those you work with?
Leonardo Helicopters UK offers a comprehensive, end-to-end capability that spans engineering design, supply chain management – much of which is rooted in the local and neighbouring communities – and global support for multiple aircraft platforms. Situated in Yeovil, the Home of British Helicopters, our historic factory has been a significant contributor to the region for over 100 years. At the heart of our mission lies national security, and we are immensely proud that our helicopters undertake life-saving missions every day around the world.
What do you enjoy most about doing business in Somerset?
Leonardo, previously known to some as Agusta Westland or simply ‘Westlands’, has proudly operated in Somerset for over a century. Our close ties with local SMEs, educational establishments such as Yeovil College, and customer bases like RNAS Yeovilton are integral to our operations, embedding us within the fabric of the community. This proximity enables us to work collaboratively across the end-to-end process, from suppliers to apprentices training at Yeovil College before joining our team on site. Somerset’s spirit is woven into Leonardo’s identity, just as Leonardo has become a cornerstone of Somerset’s heritage and industry.
Outside of work, what’s your ‘Somerset favourite’, as in a place to visit or activity you like to do in our county?
As a dog owner who loves being outdoors, I truly appreciate the breathtaking countryside Somerset offers. Whether it’s rain or sunshine, this region is a wonderful place to unwind and escape the pressures of the working week. Although Somerset isn’t my home turf, I cherish the moments spent here, from peaceful walks to the electric atmosphere of Glastonbury Festival – where you never know what the weather might bring!
