Somerset Chamber is proud to support a diverse range of organisations in the Somerset business community who are as passionate about our region as we are.
In a new series of interviews, we will be shining a spotlight on some of our Business Partners, recognising their commitment to Somerset, its business community and beyond.
Somerset Voices is also a chance to find out more about the people behind the brands!
Our next Somerset Voices spotlight is Helen Arnold-Richardson, Vice Principal Employers and Commercial at Weston College:
Please introduce yourself and tell us about your role. What does a typical day look like for you?
I’m Helen Arnold-Richardson and I am the Vice Principal Employers and Commercial at Weston College. My role focuses on connecting local businesses with the skills, training, and workforce solutions they need to grow, while also leading the commercial arm of the College.
I don’t have a typical day as the role is so varied. It includes meeting employers, shaping training programmes, and overseeing our wonderful Winter Gardens facilities — including the ballroom, coffee shop, restaurant, and hotel.
I also work closely with my team to deliver impactful partnerships and respond to emerging industry needs. Every day is different, fast-paced, and rooted in supporting Somerset’s business community and creating opportunities for learners.
Can you tell us about your business/organisation, what you do, where you’re based and how your work has a positive impact on those you work with?
Weston College is a leading education and training provider based in North Somerset, supporting learners, employers, and communities across the region. We deliver a wide range of programmes, from apprenticeships and professional training to higher education and bespoke workforce development.
Our commercial arm, including the iconic Winter Gardens, offers unique spaces and services that bring people together while providing real life work experience for our learners. Everything we do is designed to raise aspirations, build skills, and create pathways into meaningful employment.
By working closely with businesses, we help drive productivity, support growth, and make a tangible, positive impact on the local economy.
What do you enjoy most about doing business in Somerset?
I love the strong sense of community and collaboration that runs through the region. Somerset has a unique blend of entrepreneurial spirit, innovative industries, and ambitious businesses of various sizes that genuinely want to make a difference.
Working here means partnering with people who value relationships and are committed to long term growth.
I also enjoy the balance Somerset offers being a vibrant economy set within a beautiful landscape which creates an inspiring place to work. Being part of this ecosystem allows us at Weston College to support real progress, nurture talent, and contribute to a thriving future for the region.
Outside of work, what’s your ‘Somerset favourite’, as in a place to visit or activity you like to do in our county?
I enjoy being outdoors, therefore I have several ‘Somerset favourites’ namely exploring the county’s incredible coastline and countryside. I love walking around Weston Bay and Brean Down, where the mix of fresh sea air and wide open views is the perfect way to unwind.
Another one of my favourites for the weekend is Cheddar Gorge as I’m a huge fan of its dramatic cliffs and scenic walks. I enjoy visiting Somerset’s vibrant market towns too, discovering local cafés, independent shops, and community events. The county’s blend of natural beauty, character, and welcoming spirit makes it a truly special place to relax and recharge
