Richard Huish College has been shortlisted for two separate categories – COVID Above and Beyond and Enrichment and Employability’ – in the upcoming Sixth Form College Association (SFCA) Awards. The SFCA awards celebrate the past year of achievements and success of colleges across the country, as well as highlighting the great work they have done behind the scenes and for the community.
The COVID Above and Beyond Award is a special category which recognises those that have made a significant positive impact over the past 12 months in a time of disruption and separation. Alongside opening its COVID-19 testing facility to local schools and successfully supporting learners both on site and remotely, a number of #HuishHeroes arose to support the community. Apprentices and volunteers worked on the front line in schools, hospitals, and care homes while other staff and students raised funds for charity.
More information about the Huish Heroes is available online at: https://www.huish.ac.uk/news/?_sft_category=covid-19&sf_paged=4.
The Enrichment and Employability Award focuses on those who have led a programme of activity which has complemented the taught curriculum and enhanced students’ knowledge and skills. Activities at Huish this year have included Book Club, Rainbow Alliance, Music, Sports, Debating, Film Club, Photography, Blender Animation, Student E-Newsletter, Creative Writing, Wildlife Identification, Eco Action Group, Science Clubs and DofE, to name just a few. Despite the lockdown, Huish was also delighted to run it’s annual Original Writing and Illustration Awards for local schools.
Principal, Emma Fielding, said: “We strive to provide students with a broad and holistic education where, as well as achieving excellent results, our young people have the opportunity to develop their interests and wider skills in a way that prepares them for all aspects of life beyond college.
“The support of our staff, students and community has been tremendous in the past 12 months and their collective innovative and creative ideas have helped us to continue to offer a variety of enrichment possibilities.”
The winners will be announced at the online SFCA Awards ceremony on June 16.
