Student, matron and governor at Taunton School honoured with a Somerset Medal

A Sixth Form student, boarding house matron and governor at Taunton School have all been awarded with a Somerset Medal, a new initiative launched this year by Somerset County Council to acknowledge the unsung heroes of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Lauren Parker (pictured), a Year 12 student, was recognised for her work volunteering in the vaccination centre at Musgrove Park Hospital during weekends and the school holidays.  Her role has involved greeting people on arrival at the centre and being on hand to answer any queries they have.

Boarding House Matron Kirstie Davis volunteered to remain at the school to act as parental support for international pupils who were unable to travel home when the first lockdown began last year. She moved into school accommodation and stayed there throughout the spring and summer caring for the wellbeing and pastoral needs of the boys.

School Governor, Dr Ian Kelham (pictured main page) came out of retirement to join the NHS’s Covid 111 helpline in April 2020, working seven days a week for several months answering queries from those who had contracted the virus. Since January, he has played a key role in the vaccination programme in both Taunton and Minehead.

Lee Glaser, Headmaster of Taunton School, says: ‘We are all incredibly proud of these three individuals within the Taunton School community who have selflessly helped others during an incredibly challenging time. They embody the values we stand for as a school.”
