Richard Huish College students help Arc design brand identity for new social enterprise

Arc, a charitable organisation that supports homeless individuals across Taunton, Sedgemoor and West Somerset challenged graphic design students at Richard Huish College to create the brand identity for the charity’s start-up business Crescent Cleaning Services.

Crescent Cleaning Services will be an environmentally-friendly social enterprise company that supports people who have been affected by homelessness to access employment.

The three-week project saw students at Huish compete to research, develop, and design their ideas. They considered brand identity, the target audience, sketched initial ideas, trialled and reviewed variations of their designs and presented a final four-page professional style guides to the client that included a page showcasing the identity applied to uniforms, business cards and vehicles.

Crescent Cleaning ending up selecting elements from a mixture of students’ projects for the new branding. Heading-up the student team was Cerys Coates who designed the logomark. Isla Turnbull came up with the mission statement and Jemima Howell wrote a slogan. Ellie Smith established the values and Matei Tirnoveanu was responsible for the application of the brand identity.

Crescent Cleaning Services visited the College in May to thank the students and presented each contributor with a £50 voucher.

Jordan Canter, Social Enterprise Manager, at Arc said: “As a social enterprise, one of our aims is to involve our community as much as possible. Having connections with Huish through volunteers at Arc, we wanted to work with them on this project and we were not disappointed. The students had understood Arc and the people it supports but also understood what Crescent Cleaning Services as a social enterprise hopes to achieve, and as such were able to provide us with some outstanding pieces of work.

“We were really impressed and grateful for the hard work of tutors and students and are looking forward to working with Richard Huish College again in the future.”

Graphic design is an area of employment growth in the UK and anyone interested in studying graphic design should visit https://www.huish.ac.uk/courses/graphic-design-a-level/. There is still time to apply to study at Huish in September 2021.
