Charlene named as SS&L's Apprentice of the Year

A dedicated apprentice has been awarded Apprentice of the Year by Somerset Skills and Learning for her role as St James Church School in Taunton.

Charlene Passmore was surprised during a school celebration assembly last week, where staff from Somerset Skills and Learning presented her with the Apprentice of the Year trophy.

She was selected for the annual award as she was recognised by the school and her tutor at Somerset Skills and Learning for consistently demonstrating a determined approach towards her learning.

Charlene began her profession whilst working as a parent volunteer at the school, before moving on to work as a midday supervisor and also enrolled on the Supporting Teaching and Learning in Schools (STLS) Level 2, which she successfully achieved.

The school were so impressed with Charlene they encouraged her to continue her development by enrolling her on the Advanced Apprenticeship Level 3. Alongside her apprenticeship, Charlene also successfully gained her Level 2 Functional Skills in maths and ICT.

Kath Colvill, Sector Leader at Somerset Skills and Learning, said: “Charlene is a great example of how an apprenticeship can help you build a career and her determination to continue her learning is an inspiration. She has come up against challenges during her journey, but has always remained positive and enthusiastic and her tutor has always found her a pleasure to teach and support. She is a well-deserved winner, chosen from all the Apprentice of the Month winners 2019.”

Charlene is now a qualified Level 3 Teaching Assistant at St James Church School in Taunton, where she is a valued member of staff.
