On Wednesday the 28th February the 1000+ students at Frome College were treated to a wide range of talks they could select from, to give them a greater insight into different careers. This is part of the College’s comprehensive Next Steps employability programme, to try and prepare our young workers of the future, for the workplace and to help broaden their horizons about the plethora of jobs available.
Students could choose from 15 talks depending on their career interests. Talk sizes varied from smaller groups of 30 to the most popular career talk containing 236 students. Exciting talks were offered such as Space Operations by Airbus, Social Enterprise by local entrepreneurial company Edventure and TV and Film Production from Solent University.
AJ Reynold’s explained the differences between car, van and HGV mechanics, and talked about life as a mechanic and the varied jobs in the garage industry; parts person, administration, recovery. Andy Reynolds was accompanied by current Year 12 student Jakub, who is currently on a 3 day a week placement in this company for 6 months, as part of the college’s World of Work course. Progress to Excellence / Indulgence discussed vocational training for hairdressing, beauty therapy and nail technology.
The guests included 2 prior Frome College students Clare Mayo and Lewis Price; Lewis explained to students what an apprenticeship is and benefits he has gained from his Business Administration apprenticeship in a local school. HR Manager for Hanson, Clare Mayo’s talk was entitled ‘A day in the life of HR’ my Frome College education and what happened next…’
Southampton Solent University also talked about student experience and employability- to give our students an insight into life as a university student and the beneficial extra-curricular activities they should be completed to help them be successful in the job market following their Degree.
Creative students had the opportunity to listen to Chris Bailey talk about being a photographer and to see his inspirational photographs. Students were also treated to an insight into a career as a Chartered Surveyor by Projekt Property Solutions and learnt about Event Management from Dawn Denton.
The Royal Navy and Royal Marines enthralled students with details of experiences and gave an insight into today’s more rigorous candidate selection. Hanson came to discuss their current apprenticeships with sixth form students and RJF Associates and Transport gave a presentation showing the varied opportunities in the logistics sector.
