On 10th October, both Somerset Chamber of Commerce and Taunton Rugby Club were presented with the coveted Ministry of Defence Recognition Scheme Silver Award at the Lord Lieutenant’s Awards ceremony at the Bishops Place, Wells.
The scheme recognises support given to the whole of the Armed Forces Community including reservists, veterans, wounded and sick, spouses and Cadet Force adult volunteers.
Somerset Chamber Marketing and Communications Manager, Carla Tier, currently on maternity leave, was employed by the Chamber in 2016 and is an active Army Reservist.
Carla said, “I was thrilled and excited to learn of the Chamber’s award. Being an Army Reservist for ten years has played a huge part in my life, and the Chamber has always shown support by accommodating for my Reserve training commitments where possible.”
Dale Edwards, Chief Executive of the Somerset Chamber, said, “The sacrifice that our armed forces personnel give should be recognised by the business community. This is why I, and all at the Chamber, are passionate supporters of the Armed Forces Covenant.
“To receive the Silver Defence Recognition Award was a wonderful and unexpected honour and we will continue to promote the benefits of employing reservists, cadets and those leaving service.
“We invite every employer to get in touch to emulate the Somerset Chamber of Commerce in publicly declaring their support for the armed forces and their families. We’d be delighted to work with you all to find the benefit to your business and the Somerset economy.”
Taunton RFC have scheduled a public declaration of their support to the defence community when they formally sign the Armed Forces Covenant on Saturday 4th November during the Taunton Titan’s home game against Henley Hawks – Kick off at 3pm. The Armed Forces Day is kindly supported by Taunton School and will involve cadets from across Somerset along with a marching band and entertainment. Free entrance is offered to any serving members or veterans of the Armed Forces, with a valid ID or veteran’s badge.
