Dale Edwards, Chief Executive of Somerset Chamber comments on the recent announcement by the Prime Minister on the free movement of talent across Europe.
“The announcement by the Prime Minister allowing EU nationals who have lived in the UK for 5 Years with rights to stay, access to health, education and other benefits is welcome.
My question to the government is, why could it not have been stated nearly a year ago, as the lack of clarity from government has caused significant uncertainty in the Somerset business community, many of which rely on the skills and experience that EU nationals bring.
I also felt the announcement did not go far enough. What is needed is a watertight reciprocal agreement that all EU nationals and UK nationals who are resident at the time of the Brexit final agreement, should be allowed to stay with full rights. This needs to be resolved as a matter of priority and as soon as possible”.
