Somerset's £850m Tourism Industry
There is one undeniable fact about the South West in relation to the UK’s tourism industry. It is Britain’s foremost holiday destination. For example, UK residents alone made 24.4 million trips to the South West in 2001.

The South West has become a critical and dynamic element in the UK tourism industry because it offers unparalleled diversity in its environment and heritage, and can compete globally with its range of world-class attractions and accommodation. Somerset fortifies its role within the South West because it offers outstanding countryside including the Quantock Hills, Mendip Hills, Blackdown Hills and Brendon Hills as well as beaches, Exmoor National Park, villages and market towns.

The county has over 45 miles of coastline, three Areas of Outstanding Natural Beauty and a range of marked walking trails, bridle ways and cycle routes. There are many visitor attractions for all the family along with a variety of places to stay.

Many job opportunities have arisen as a reflection of the growing tourism industry within Somerset and the visitors it brings.
Many retails establishments, pubs, cafes, restaurants, village shops, leisure facilities, garden centres and other industries have all benefited greatly from tourism.
