Somerset Chamber of Commerce Skills Agenda
Many young people are denied meaningful interactions with the world of work, and many employers are frustrated by the lack of skills and experience they are looking for. Our research shows many businesses think more can be done to better prepare young people for the workplace.
Key areas that need addressing are improving ‘soft skills’ such as:
- Problem solving skills
- Time Management
- Team working
The Somerset Chamber of Commerce believe it is a shared responsibility between business, educational providers and government to contribute to the local skills agenda. We are therefore committed to bridging the gap between business and education, by increasing collaboration between the business community and education providers, to improve young people’s transition to work.
- Assist in developing relationships between local employers and schools/colleges creating opportunities for them to discuss how best to help young people be better prepared for working in Somerset
- Assist local schools/colleges through the Educational Engagement Directory giving businesses the opportunity to speak at schools, mentor students, and give work place tours
- Raise awareness through social media
